Dennis O'Neil

Biographie

Dennis O'Neil is one of the most renowned comic writers. After graduating from St. Louis University, he joined the navy just in time to participate in the blockade of Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis. After leaving the navy, O'Neil worked on a newspaper, but quickly moved on to comics, penning issues of Dr. Strange. He spent some time at Charlton Comics writing under the pseudonym "Sergius O'Shaugnessy" before joining DC to rejuvenate Wonder Woman and Justice League of America. He is remembered for his still controversial decision to strip Wonder Woman of her powers and costume.

O'Neil was the major force in introducing socially relevant themes into Green Lantern/Green Arrow and taking comics in a more adult direction. This could also be seen in his later work on Justice League of America where he had heroes dealing with real-world problems, not just fantasy villains.

Perhaps his greatest contribution was to return the dark tone to Batman who had been more of a parody than an actual character for many years. He also revamped the Superman franchise in the early '70s.

Dennis O'Neil has been a huge force in the comic world, working on and revitalizing many of the biggest lines. He took over the job of group editor for the Batman books, which he retains to this day.
